All of what we are to be and to do as a New Testament church of Jesus Christ are summarized in the three words, surrendering, strengthening and shining.
Surrendering
has to do with our worship of God and our vertical relationship with Him through prayer, music, drama and other fine arts. We also worship God in the giving of our time, talent and treasure to Him and to His Kingdom. We recognize He has given us stewardship over these things and our managing and giving of all our resources is surrendering them to His ownership. Surrender extends to our daily life and all of life is to be lived as an act of worship and surrender to God. “Whatever you do, you do heartily as unto the Lord.” (Colossians 3:23)
Strengthening
means we are actively pursuing the knowledge of God and His Word. This happens through Bible study, through preaching, teaching and encouraging one another. Small group Bible study programs like Sunday School and AWANA are designed to accomplish the goal of strengthening ourselves in God’s Word. We are to be “approved workmen of God’s Word.” (2 Timothy 2:15)
Shining
is all about taking Christ to a hopeless world. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.” (John 8:12) He also said, “Let your light shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in Heaven.” (Matthew 5:16) When we are being what God wants us to be, we will be using our gifts, talents and abilities to reach and serve those around us, and we will be a lighthouse and a beacon to our community and around the world!
